How to calculate the total length for my project
Most patterns suggest the amount of yarn needed for the respective project.
However, you often want to use a different yarn, either from your stash or because you prefer a different brand or colourway. Sometimes, the necessary weight or length refers only to one size (mostly on clothing items).
In the first case, your first step is to compare the yarn suggested with the yarn you want to use. If the two yarns are of the same weight and material, you can use the same amount and add about 100 meters to ensure that your yarn will be enough for the project.
If the yarn has a different material or weight, you can check if there is a gauge swatch. This is a 10 cm x 10 cm part of the pattern and indicates how many stitches and rows are to be crafted to achieve it. Adjust your yarn and craft accessories to achieve it, and then weigh it to see how much yarn you used. This way, you can calculate how much yarn you will need.
In the second case, a rather safe estimate is that you need about 200โ300 meters more for every size.
Sometimes, while following all instructions and using the same yarn suggested in a pattern, you find yourself needing more yarn to complete your project. This happens due to the tension of your crafting. If you crochet or knit rather tightly or loosely, you will notice that the yarn amount you use is more or less than the amount suggested.
